Local celebrities bare all to raise awareness for their chosen charities in Marie Claire magazine’s 2017 ‘Naked’ issue, which is daring, provocative and body-positive. Nomzamo Mbatha looks stunning posing nude on the cover, for a worthy cause.

“This year, the issue is concealed in an eye-catching gold bag – the process of unwrapping it to unveil the beautiful cover and what lies within the magazine is part of the delight. The intriguing and innovative visual appeal of this issue will disrupt the newsstands and is an inventive approach not seen before locally,” says Associated Media Group CEO, Julia Raphaely.

“Previously the campaign was published in Marie Claire’s March editions, but this year we chose to roll it out in our July issue, to coincide with Mandela Day, because the message behind Mandela Day is simple: ‘everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better’,” says Raphaely.

“This year Marie Claire took a slightly different approach to previous years – in the past, the entire campaign was dedicated to one charity, in 2017 our celebrities are each supporting a single charity or cause – something close to their heart, that they feel strongly about, whether it be education, LGBT rights, animal welfare or women’s rights,” comments Marie Claire Features Editor Lynette Botha.

Other celebrities who bare all include DJ Fikile Moeti, radio host Thando Thabethe, TV star K Naomi Noinyane, actors Nicole Fortuin and Omuhle Gela, models Sanele Xaba and Rosette Ncwana, performer Moonchild Sanelly, radio and TV personality Bailey Schneider, chefs Giles Edwards, Ash Heeger and Eric Bulpitt, digital entrepreneur Yoliswa Mqoco, artist Lady Skollie, fashion designers Lukhanyo Mdingi and Nicholas Coutts, tastemaker Seth Shezi, and trail runner Ryan Sandes.

As to why it is important for celebs to get naked for their individual chosen causes Botha says that as society, we look up to celebrities, influencers, sports people and the like, “it’s important for them to use their clout to alert people to social causes and how they can help. There are so many issues we face in South Africa, and by highlighting individual causes and charities this maximises the reach and impact of the campaign,” she adds.

For the first time this year, Marie Claire is holding an auction of the celebrity portraits, and all proceeds will go to the celebs’ various charities. The exclusive event will be held at Melrose Gallery in Johannesburg on Thursday, 13 July 2017.

Commenting on why Marie Claire’s annual Naked project is so important, Botha says: “It is important for all of us to do our bit, in any way that we can – not only to be activists on social media, but to actually get out there and do things that make a difference. Whether that be donating money or time, or actively campaigning for change.”

SA Fashion Week (SAFW) opened last night to a flurry of excitement, showcasing some of the most innovative and cutting-edge designs the South African fashion industry has to offer.

Woolworths launched their 2017 ‘StyleBySA’ seasonal campaign by championing home-grown talent, featuring a capsule collection by eight local designers who are taking the fashion scene by storm, namely Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, AKJP, Pichulik, Maria McCloy, Sol-Sol, Selfi and Young & Lazy.

From modern streetwear, to footwear and accessories inspired by the continent, the debut collaboration was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. In a first for SAFW, the collection was available online straight from the runway, resulting in a frenzy of online sales throughout the evening.

The significant partnership between Woolworths and SAFW has prioritised fast-tracking South Africa fashion from the runway to the rails. Charmaine Huet, Woolworths’ Group Director of Marketing and Sustainability, says, “As a passionately South African retailer we want to boost the visibility and viability of local designers. The quality of the work on show last night, and the response to it, is compelling proof of the incredible local talent the South African fashion industry has on offer.’’ Having pioneered the concept of local design collaborations with their Stoned Cherrie, Craig Native and Maya Prass collections over a decade ago, it’s another step forward for the passionately local retailer.

The StyleBySA capsule collection will be available exclusively online at www.woolworths.co.za while stocks last this week. Meet Your New Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters 👑

On Sunday evening Demi-Leigh Nel Peters was crowned Miss South Africa 2017 along with 1st Princess, Adè van Heerden and 2nd Princess is Boipelo Mabe.

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters won prizes worth over 2 million rands including a 1 million rand cash prize, a car and 28 bursaries for herself and her choice of students!

Miss South Africa 2017 is from Sedgefield in the Western Cape is a 21-year-old final year B.Com business management and entrepreneurship student. She is also a part-time model at Boss Models and Vision Management.

She was the first girl in her high school to be chosen as head girl of both the school and its hostel. Demi-Leigh was also elected as the Deputy Junior Mayor of the George City Council in Grade 11.

She makes handmade cards and does scrapbooking. She says her biggest motivator is her half-sister, who was born without a cerebellum and is completely disabled.

Last night my sister and I came across a really cool stall at the Sexpo SA, not only were the people there looking super cool and sexy because of their tattoos but there were really cool visuals.

We went there and at first glance we thought someone was getting a tattoo but there was no needle involved, they were using an airbrush! After speaking to these guys we found out they do air rush tattoos- They make whatever you want look like a real tattoo, advantage of this, it’s not permanent! They even do full body painting making it look like you’re wearing something tight when you’re actually naked. They also do graffiti and mural painting – they did that on Cassper Nyovest’s “I hope you bought it” music video.

“Photography is the universal language spoken by all”, the profoundness of this statement should never be trivialised as we are inherently visual creatures, shaping our realities through the things we see, leaving us changed forever. Buenos dias amigos, I’m Adrian, being a Linux engineer is what pays the bills but what really invigorates me is photography, the art of writing with light. During my recent backpacking trip through Peru and Bolivia I was pleasantly overwhelmed by the sights of the local Andean cultures, their art, their indigenous fashion and the undulating peaks and troughs of these mountain countries. As one of a few South Africans traveling in South America I had this undying urge to share these sights with my friends and family back home and so the seed to pick up the camera was sown. As soon as I returned to South Africa I bought myself an entry level DSLR and started shooting away, researching techniques and base skills needed to visually recreate images I’d seen and portray them to viewers hopefully leaving them moved and touching their emotions. I’ve only been plying my craft for under 3 months as the technical aspects, such as ISO, aperture and shutter speed are best learned in the field. Composition and making your photographs interesting are either innate but could also be honed by continuous shooting, as they say “Repetition is the father of learning”.
