The much anticipated unveiling of Sun International’s Time Square was marked by a dramatic light and pyrotechnics display on Saturday 1 April 2017. Revellers at the music festival featuring Bobby van Jaarsveld and Desmond and the Tutus amongst others watched in awe as the Time Square building sprung to life and appeared to shift and move with lighting effects. The dazzling light display culminated with fireworks bursting into the night sky. Quiet fireworks were used in line with Sun International’s community commitment.   The official ribbon cutting, hailing the start of a new era of entertainment in Tshwane, took place on Saturday morning. From 12h00 onwards, the festival area between Time Square and Central Square was abuzz with activity. Jacaranda FM broadcast live from the venue and there was a string of bands in the mix. Taking to the stage during the afternoon were Adelle Nqueto, Sutherland, Majozi, Bobby van Jaarsveld and Desmond and the Tutus. Woolworths launched their 2017 ‘StyleBySA’ seasonal campaign by championing home-grown talent, featuring a capsule collection by eight local designers who are taking the fashion scene by storm, namely Rich Mnisi, Thebe Magugu, AKJP, Pichulik, Maria McCloy, Sol-Sol, Selfi and Young & Lazy.   From modern streetwear, to footwear and accessories inspired by the continent, the debut collaboration was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. In a first for SAFW, the collection was available online straight from the runway, resulting in a frenzy of online sales throughout the evening.   The significant partnership between Woolworths and SAFW has prioritised fast-tracking South Africa fashion from the runway to the rails. On Sunday evening Demi-Leigh Nel Peters was crowned Miss South Africa 2017 along with 1st Princess, Adè van Heerden and 2nd Princess is Boipelo Mabe. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters won prizes worth over 2 million rands including a 1 million rand cash prize, a car and 28 bursaries for herself and her choice of students! Miss South Africa 2017 is from Sedgefield in the Western Cape is a 21-year-old final year B.Com business management and entrepreneurship student. She is also a part-time model at Boss Models and Vision Management.   She was the first girl in her high school to be chosen as head girl of both the school and its hostel. Demi-Leigh was also elected as the Deputy Junior Mayor of the George City Council in Grade 11. She makes handmade cards and does scrapbooking.
