About The Taung Cultural Calabash

About The Taung Cultural Calabash

The North West Province’s Taung Cultural Calabash Festival was founded on a strong commitment to develop the art and artists of this culturally rich and diverse province. Unlike many arts festivals, the Taung Cultural Calabash is grounded within a strong developmental ethos that’s permeates every aspect of the festival from the performances to the venues and management style.

It is a festival that has humble beginnings as a one-day event in the village of Taung, site of the famous “Taung Skull”. First held in 1994, the Cultural Calabash was designed to stir the pride of people in their indigenous cultures and arts forms by allowing them a performance space, a day of Dance, Drama, Music, Comedy, Poetry, and Other Cultural Celebration. That initial impetus grew into a set of provincial competitions to uncover and nurture the creativity of North Western arts practitioners. The level of participation has been unprecedented.

  • Within each district, auditions and competition eliminations held in four (04) municipalities served by the Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs.
  • Auditions are to take part in the four (04) North West Districts;
    • Bojanala Platimum District
    • Ruth Mompati District
    • Ngaka Modiri District
    • Kenneth Kaunda District
  • Winners from the four districts complete in the grand Cultural Calabash Festival which is annually held in Taung. There, emerging artists are afforded an opportunity to share a variety of platforms with national range of semi-professional and professional artists providing motivation and a professional standard to aspire.

CHESTER BENNINGTON’S DEATH: A REMINDER THAT DEPRESSION SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

CHESTER BENNINGTON’S DEATH: A REMINDER THAT DEPRESSION SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

On 20th July, heartbreaking news broke out about the sudden departure of Chester Bennington (lead singer of rock band Linkin Park). He too was battling with depression and for him, suicide was the only way out. The singer was loved by millions of fans from all over the world, unfortunately depression affects anyone.

The severe feeling of dejection and hopelessness is cited as depression. Depression affects your thoughts, behavior, mood, and people around you. Often it is said that depression goes away with time, but it is not some feeling that stays for a little while and goes away.

So how can one tell whether someone is depressed?

SIGNS OF DEPRESSION

There are some symptoms that can help in pointing out if a person is in a state of depression or not:

  • Having trouble in concentrating and making decisions
  • Difficulty in remembering details
  • Always feeling fatigued and low on energy
  • Having the feeling of hopelessness
  • Thinking of oneself as worthless
  • Insomnia
  • Restlessness
  • Always feeling irritated
  • Can be appetite loss or overeating
  • Thinking of suicide/suicide attempts

We all feel lonely, sad and depressed from time to time, and it is normal to feel depressed over the loss of someone, struggles in life or any other reason. The problem begins when these feelings start to grow and the period of their stay prolongs.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING HELP

People with depression often seem to think that there is no other option, and they choose something seriously devastating, suicide. One can seek help from many sources.  There are people such as:

  • Family members
  • Friends
  • Doctors
  • Mental health counselors
  • Depression groups and other sources

A person that is depressed can have his mind changed about various things by just seeking for help.

Here are some reasons that can highlight the significance of looking out for help:

A PERSON STARTS TO ACCEPT THE REALITY

Accepting the reality is the first stage of recovery from depression. The basic issue that is faced by people suffering from depression is that they find it difficult and unbelievable that they are battling with depression. By seeking help, they will be given consultation and they will come to accept the reality.

IT HELPS IN COMING BACK TO NORMAL LIFE

People that are suffering from depression cut themselves away from the society. Cutting from the society means that a person starts spending more time alone, and the loneliness leads to more depression. Giving more time to a depressed person can help in eliminating the loneliness. Isolation is one of the main reasons that increase the level of depression.

SEEKING HELP MAKES A PERSON TO VALUE LIFE AGAIN

When a person seeks help from their family and friends, that person needs that reassurance that ‘Life can be lived happily”. One thing that a depressed person needs to know is that there is nothing to feel ashamed of seeking help.

If you think you are depressed or feel mostly sad than happy, seek help. Go see a doctor or contact the South African Depression And Anxiety Group:

You don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to be part of South Africa’s most highly anticipated events in the annual social calendar, the Grand White. The Grand White is a pop-up picnic event at a secret location, which only gets revealed on the morning of the event. The events are a lively social gathering of people, all there for the common goal, an extraordinary afternoon and evening together with friends and family.
Just imagine an alluring day turning into evening at a secret, picturesque location, stylish and gorgeous people to interact with, delicious food, your favorite bubbly as well as trendy music and entertainment by some of South Africa’s top acts and musicians.
