When it comes to talking about the future, some high school students are often clueless. Their inability to make a life-changing decision is becoming a serious issue, and most of these students are heading in the same direction because that appears to be the safest route. We need to change that by guiding them in the right direction. Here are some tips:
 
CHOOSING A CAREER YOU LIKE
First of all, you should look into what you are good at or what are your likes. We all have hobbies but we don’t consider them as anything else besides a pass time or a way to entertain ourselves. If that is the case, then you should acknowledge that many people turn their hobbies into prosperous careers. A wise man once said “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” The benefit of doing so is that you will be able to love what you do and it’s a rare thing these days.
EMPHASIZE ON THE SUBJECT THAT YOU TAKE THE MOST INTEREST IN
You may consider most of the subjects boring or have no such interest for them but there is always that one subject that you love. That one subject can be a gateway to your dream life if you are willing to work on it.
Suppose your favorite subject is biology. You could look forward to being a doctor or a biologist and you can become a chemical engineer if you like chemistry. The list goes on and on, there are vast career opportunities that are neglected by students.
STRATEGIZE A PLAN
Make a plan of goals that you want to achieve one day. This plan will work as a roadmap for you since you need an inspiration. You want to be a writer one day, then go ahead and make a roadmap for it. The point is, you have to choose a career that fascinates you the most, and the best way is to look into different options.
APPLY FOR VARSITY ON TIME AND ATTEND ORIENTATIONS
You need to make sure that you apply to universities, colleges or relevant higher education institutions on time. This gives students the opportunity to weigh their options, also saves them from the mess of late registrations. There are many orientations that are conducted by universities and students can get ample career guidance and a feel of the environment at the institutions. They can also meet professors and get tips about choosing the best career.
APPLY FOR BURSARIES/ FUNDING
If you know that your parents or guardians might not be able to pay for your varsity expenses, it is very important to apply for bursaries or scholarships. This is because if you cannot afford to pay for your fees and you don’t have any funding you might not be able to further your studies. The government and different companies offer various bursaries for different fields.
 
ATTEND CAREER EXPOS AT ALL COST
Students are not inclined much towards attending career expos and this is where they miss the trick. It is imperative that students attend career expos and meet new companies and career guidance counselors.  They’ll have an abundance of knowledge and valuable insight to share. It’ll be a big loss for a student to not attend career expos.
 
DO NOT FOLLOW OTHER STUDENTS IN CHOOSING A CAREER
Sometimes students are not able to make up their mind. This may be due to not knowing their true potential or their likes and dislikes. For that students need to explore, they need to have a good understanding of themselves; like what they want and what they want to aim for. For some people, this means taking some time off to think like a “gap year”. There is nothing wrong with this, so don’t feel bad. It’s more important that you figure out what you want. Making a decision entirely on the basis of following other students could be one of the biggest mistakes you’ll ever make. After all, after high school you will most likely separate from some of your friends, now you will be stuck studying something you aren’t entirely passionate about on your own.
FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS
You need to focus on your strengths, be it studies or even sports/ extramural activities; let these guide you onto choosing the right career path. All in all, take your time and make a career decision that suits you the most. Best of luck!
