Cinema Nouveau is excited to be bringing the first feature film produced by the Out in Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, While You Weren’t Looking, to its cinemas and Ster-Kinekor Maponya Mall, from Friday, 02 October. This follows successful screenings of the film at festivals around the world, and winning an Audience Award (Pink Apple L&GFF Zurich) and Best Feature Director for Catherine Stewart (QFilms, Long Beach California).
While You Weren’t Looking is the feature film directing debut of SAFTA Award winner Catherine Stewart (Mzani’s trending The Road, Isibaya, The Lab, Home Affairs, Tsha Tsha, Jacob’s Cross). It is also the first film produced by Out in Africa, organisers of the South African Gay and Lesbian Film Festival for the past 21 years.
A complex interweaving tale, While You Weren’t Looking begins twenty years into the New South Africa as ageing academic Mack (Gums and Noses and Sorted‘s Lionel Newton) looks for Salute, the young freedom fighter he sheltered and loved. Salute (Fezile Mpela of Mzanzi and 7de Laan fame) has moved on: he is now Joe, married with a child, and rising in government and political party structures.
The affluent mixed-race lesbian couple Dez (Binnelanders’ Sandi Schultz) and Terri (Tempy Pusha’s Camilla Waldman) struggle to maintain their own desires and ambitions while reigning in the rebellious instincts of their beautiful teenage daughter, Asanda (Of Good Report’s Petronella Tshuma). As their daughter falls for Shado (Man on Ground’s Thishiwe Ziqubu), a girl from a different background, Dez and Terri must cope with their own hypocrisies and secrets, which threaten to unravel the seemingly perfect world they’ve crafted.

While You Weren’t Looking was shot by Amelia Henning on locations in and around Cape Town in just 24 days. The strong soundtrack includes music from the likes of Toya Delazy, Zaki Ibrahim, Spoek Mathambo and Umlilo.
While You Weren’t Looking screens at Cinema Nouveau theatres at Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg, Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria and Gateway in Durban, as well as Ster-Kinekor Maponya Mall, from Friday 02 October. It releases at Cinema Nouveau V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Thursday, 08 October, due to building renovations currently underway at this site. The running time of the film is 1hr 44mins, and it carries a 16-LPSN classification.
