Calling Pink Floyd fans, and music lovers, countrywide – Ster-Kinekor has something special just for you… and for one night only!

Roger Waters The Wall, the documentary that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) last year, will blast onto cinema screens simultaneously across the world – including North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa – for one show only. In South Africa, this exclusive cinema event has been secured by Ster-Kinekor and will be shown at select cinemas across the country on Tuesday, 29 September at 8pm.

The film is written and co-directed by Roger Waters and Sean Evans. On 29 September, it will play out on global on big screen together with a new bonus feature: an “in conversation” segment with Waters and Nick Mason.

This special cinema event, Roger Waters The Wall, was shot in 4K and mixed in Dolby Atmos during Waters’ sold-out 2010-2013 The Wall Live tour. Seen by over 1,5 million fans across North America, 1 million fans across Latin and Central America and 1 million fans across Europe, it was the biggest worldwide tour by a solo artist, ever.

Fans who attend this unique cinema event at Ster-Kinekor’s flagship complex at Gateway in Durban, will be treated to the full Dolby Atmos sound sensation in Cinema 1. This was the first cinema on the continent to install this sophisticated and complex surround sound system, which includes speakers strategically placed around the cinema for perfect acoustics. Hearing the concert in this cinema promises to be a sound-blowing experience!

Audiences will be taken on a journey that unfolds on many levels – as an immersive concert experience of the classic Pink Floyd album, a road movie of Waters’ reckoning with the past, and as a stirring anti-war event, highlighting the human cost of conflict. Additionally, fans will have a unique opportunity to see The Simple Facts – an exclusive ‘in-conversation with Roger Waters and his Pink Floyd bandmate Nick Mason’, reunited and unscripted, to answer questions submitted by fans from around the world.

Waters originally wrote the piece for Pink Floyd based on his own experiences growing up in post-war England. The Wallalbum, from 1979, is one of the biggest-selling LPs in chart history.
Last year, Waters referred to the documentary as a “protest movie”. The film includes concert footage from Waters’ three-year solo tour in which he played The Wall in its entirety. In addition, it features behind-the-scenes footage from France and Italy of Waters on pilgrimages to the World War I cemetery where his grandfather is buried, as well as to the Anzio Beachhead, where his father’s name is among the many inscribed on plaques honouring the WWII veterans who died in the prolonged 1944 battle that took place there.

Waters commented on the upcoming worldwide release of the film, saying: “We were a big family on the road, 189 of us, give or take the odd Snoozy Walrus. We were happy, by and large. With your help, this coming 29 September will be the perfect way to remember not just our loved ones, but the other guys’ loved ones — fallen, living and as yet unborn.”

“Ever since The Wall was released, it has become one of the classic rock albums of all time,” said TIFF Director and CEO Piers Handling in a press release. “Its popularity continues and its message is still timely. Deeply affected by his father’s and grandfather’s deaths in the two world wars, Roger Waters has crafted a plea to tear down the walls that lead to misunderstandings and wars. This powerful performance film allows Roger to explore what The Wall still means to him as he performs it in front of tens of thousands of fans, and visits more personal places that resonate with meaning on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.”

Promising an ‘immersive experience’ for viewers and a ’rib-rattling, sonically stupendous piece of filmmaking’, bookings are now open for this monumental event where music and personal passion collide. The running time of the film is 2hrs 50mins.
